After graduating from college in 1979, I stuck my thumb out on Interstate 94 in St. Paul, Minnesota and started hitchhiking East. I returned home a year later still heading East. While on that journey around the world I read “Extraordinary Popular Delusions and the Madness of Crowds” by Charles Mackey, originally published in 1841. I determined that people today are at least as nuts as back in 1841, and that someone needed to write a modern sequel to Mackay’s work.
That someone turned out to be me.
